Jindal Steel Oman plans to build its second direct reduction iron plant

On September 16th, Jindal Steel Duqm announced its plan to build its second hydrogen direct reduction iron plant in Al Wusta province of the Sultanate of Oman, scheduled to be put into operation in 2026.

This new direct reduction iron plant will adopt the Zero Reformer Energiron technology jointly developed by Tenova and Danieli ®), The annual designed production capacity is 2.5 million tons, with an average metallization rate of 94%. The main product is hot pressed block iron suitable for storage or export. The products of the direct reduction iron plant will use Hytemp ® The pneumatic conveying system directly delivers hot reduced iron above 600 degrees Celsius into the electric arc furnace, making the entire production process efficient and energy-saving. One of the characteristics of the direct reduction technology jointly developed by Tenon and Danieli is the use of mixed gas reducing agents. Factories equipped with this technology can use natural gas with a hydrogen content of up to 80% for production, or a mixture of the two in any ratio for production without the need for equipment modification.

The project will utilize natural gas and renewable energy from the Sultanate of Oman to produce hydrogen. At the same time, the project will embed carbon capture facilities into the direct reduction iron plant, comprehensively utilize the captured carbon dioxide, and integrate it into the larger green steel complex of Jindal Steel Oman Company.
